At only 20 and 18 years of age, respectively, sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey are already trailblazing in the entertainment space. Discovered by Beyonce for their stunning YouTube covers of hit songs (Pretty Hurts being the one that caught B’s eye), the two have spent the last few years under her tutelage have chosen the year 2018 as the year of their breakout. The third of only three acts signed to Beyonce’s Parkwood Entertainment, it’s safe to say, they’re special. In so many arenas, the girls are winning, and I, for one, am enjoying every move they make.
In the music space, the duo’s debut album The Kids Are Alright, released in March of this year, peaked at level 13 on the Billboard 200 Chart, while bringing a beautifully avant-garde, ethereal sound to the R&B category. The album, they not only performed, but wrote and produced (!). In addition, they’ve written and created for some of the most popular soundtracks this year (Grown-ish, A Wrinkle in Time). In the acting space, the girls are a fan favorite in the hit new tv-show, Grown-ish.
As with many of our other favorites, this newfound spotlight has also given the duo an opportunity to be fashion and beauty icons for little black girls everywhere. In this domain, as with every other, the girls excel. Whether on the runway or red carpet, they stop the show. Longtime loc-wearers, over the years, they’ve show us that locs can have just as much (if not more) versatility as any other hair type. With a classic sensibility that’s beyond their years these girls bring a fresh, vibrant air to natural hair styling.
In an interview with Los Angeles Times, the girls give us a little insight on who and what is behind their hair styling and maintenance:
My sister and I have had locks all our lives. Our mom would do our hair or we would do it. We still do our own hair a lot of times and keep up the maintenance. But we do have these really great hairstylists, Kimberley McAllister in L.A. and Nigella [Hair Studio] in New York. We just love having fun and adding new things to our hair and curling it in different ways.
Their hair always looks amazing so it’s safe to say this a dream team. Let’s take a look at some of the loc masterpieces Chloe and Halle, along with Kimberley and Nigella, have created. It was really hard to stick to just ten, but here are a few that we all can try (or at least be inspired by) at home!
