10 Times Issa Rae Gave Us Natural Hair Style Inspo

Issa Rae is at the height of her career right now. Her critically acclaimed and highly decorated web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl (MABG),” released seven years ago, has trampolined her to entertainment royalty status. She now stars, writes, and executive produces Insecure, a dramatic comedy series on HBO (inspired by the MABG web series), which is already on its third season. Insecure has won multiple awards, and more than that, has shed light on undiscovered talent in the black community. Rae uses her show as a platform to uplift music, art and fashion that until now has been overlooked.

In addition to using her show, she also uses her red carpet appearances as a way to give visibility to black beauty and natural hair styles. With the help of her extremely talented hairstylist, Felicia Leatherwood, Issa Rae is keeping us on the edge of our seats with every new style. In a recent interview with Essence magazine, Felicia says:

One of the things that people don’t tend to realize is that they think I plan these hairstyles ahead of time.  I don’t. Issa trusts me and she gives me the freedom to just create in the moment. So I had such an amazing freedom to just do my own thing.

That’s amazing. We won’t talk about what “doing my own thing” is for me and my natural hair. It’s scary.

COVERGIRL has also taken notice of Issa, and she’s now a face of the cosmetics brand. This is special, and dare I say, necessary in the black community, as natural hair icons are still a minority amongst the faces we see across our magazines and red carpets.

Let’s take a look at 10 of Issa’s styles giving me major natural hair and protective style inspiration
