Taraji P Henson Get the look

Some might know her as Yvette, Queenie, Lauren, or the notorious Cookie Lyon from the various acting roles she has played over the years, but for those of us who are inspired by her road to success, Taraji P. Henson is the ultimate friend in our head. Taraji’s down-to-earth personality, fashion forward ensembles, coupled with her keep-it-real attitude has us nodding our heads, and snapping our fingers to her quick witted phrases in her current role on Empire. Recently, Taraji released her memoir titled Around the Way Girl, which chronicles her parent’s abusive relationship, her acting career, experience as a single mother, and much more.

Taraji P Henson Around the Way Girl In her memoir, Taraji describes in great detail how her parent’s abusive relationship, later impacted and influenced her relationship with her son Marcell’s father. Taraji characterizes her father, Boris as a hardworking man, who fought in the Vietnam War, and later returned to a country that had drastically changed.

Before leaving for the war, Boris had his own business putting metal rods onto residents windows. After returning from the war, many residents were out of jobs or moved out of the area, and no longer needed his services. Since the army was unable to provide him with the psychological and financial support he desperately needed, he sought solace in alcohol and began physically and mentally abusing his wife. Instead of despising her father, Taraji introspectively examined her father’s past, so she could understand how to end this cycle of violence with her son’s father Mark Johnson.

Although she did not have much, she refused to let any obstacle obstruct her vision. “I did not have a job. I did not have a SAG[Screen Actor’s Guild] card, which would allow me to actually work as an actress. But I was the ultimate hustler, and by hook or cook I was going to be a star (Essence).” Taraji’s perseverance helped her face any obstacle head on and never give up.

In 2015, she received the Critic’s Choice Award and Golden Globe Award for her role as Cookie on the show Empire. On December 25, 2016, Taraji will play the historical role of Katherine Johnson, a physicist, space scientist, and mathematical wiz, who along with three other African-American women calculated how space shuttles could orbit the earth. This movie along with Taraji’s endless roster of work will stand the test of time.
