On Saturday, May 19, 2012, natural, transitioning and locked women in Raleigh came together to celebrate the 2012 National Natural Hair Meetup Day, A Celebration of Copious Curls. This event filled with eating, laughing and sharing was organized by Brandi McKinnie and Chassity Bynum of the Real Curlfriends of North Carolina.
The event, which was held at Zydeco in downtown Raleigh, began with being greeted and welcomed upon entering the door. You were greeted with smiling, friendly faces and after being welcomed to the event, I was given a swag bag, which was given to VIP ticket holders. The bag included hair care information, product samples and other goodies.
As the ladies came in, their picture was snapped and they were directed to comfortable chairs facing the stage where the hilarious hostess, Janeen, was beginning the door prize giveaways. The door prizes included natural hair staples by Shea Moisture, new products made by Brandi McKinnie, gift certificates to Taji’s Natural Hair Styling, etc.
In between the giveaways, ladies were encouraged to introduce themselves to others and share their natural hair story. From questions about hair to job information, the women took advantage of the opportunity to get to know each other.
A question and answer session was also held by Dr. Adrienne Carthon, Creator and Former President of Entwine Couture Beauty, LLC. She answered questions regarding the commonly discussed topic of co-washing and gave tips on how to treat dry scalp. After the Q&A session, a product swap was held where ladies could bring up to five products to be swapped. I swapped a few of my items and was able to snag the Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Invigorating Conditioner, which is good for dry scalp.
This event was a great success and I left feeling encouraged, inspired and beautiful. If you are in North Carolina and interested in being a part of the Real Curlfriends of North Carolina, visit their meetup group and sign up today. Stay beautyful!
