Queen Sugar is set in the historical backdrop of New Orleans, where family traditions, food, and culture are more powerful than tropical storms. Although Queen Sugar was first introduced as a novel by the author Natalie Baszile, it is currently being brought to life every Wednesday night on the OWN channel by the director Ava DuVernay and executive producer Oprah Winfrey.
Since this series contains so many hidden details, if you blink you will miss them. When it first premiered, no commercials were shown in order to give viewers a chance to really soak in the various nuances of each character.
In the opening episode, we are introduced to the character Nova Bordelon a social activist, journalist, and root doctor played by the actress Rutina Wesley. Rutina is well-known for her role as Tara Thornton on the hit series True Blood. Wesley graduated from the prestigious Julliard School in 2001. Although she has acted in many films and shows, Rutina stated in an interview with the Huffington Post that the opportunity to play a “fully-fleshed out character like Nova is any actor’s dream come true because she’s a real human being.”
During her first scene, the camera zooms in on Nova’s long cascading locs trailing against her naked body. Then the camera pans out to reveal Nova lying next to a man, whom we later find out is a married detective. Nova’s unabashed nakedness displays her fearlessness, vulnerability, and boldness to disregard the world’s perspective of her, but rather deflect it.
After the passing of her father, Nova argues with her sister Charley for hiring a catering company for the overpass. Nova believes that soul food cooked by family members is best, while Charley expresses that she is just trying to help. There’s a deeper story that will eventually unfold between Charley and Nova, since they are trying to uphold their father’s dying wish to keep his farm. This commitment causes the dysfunctional dynamics of their relationship to reach a tipping point and a power struggle to ensue.
This show serves as a reminder to us that no family is perfect or without it own secrets.
Rutina is the essence of chic. Her glamorous outfit and stylish hairdo create a timeless look that any fashionista would like to recreate. Get all of Rutina’s beauty breakdown details below.
Rutina has worn various hairstyles over the years. Although she is currently rocking long dreadlocks on Queen Sugar in the picture above her hair is blown out and pinned back. To achieve this look use a teasing comb at the root of your hair to add volume. Then pin each side of your hair up into a low bun using Goody bobby pins.
Rutina completed her regal look with a flawless makeup application. Cream based foundations appear to have been used to compliment her smooth canvas. AJ Crimson’s Dual Skin Creme foundation is the perfect option to recreate Rutina’s look. Apply this foundation in the shade 4 to highlight and 7 to contour. Press and blend these two shades together to create a natural and seamless application.
Opting for a more natural look, Rutina’s makeup artist might have used an intense black eyeliner like Inglot #44. Apply this liner with a Sonia Kashuk bent tipped eyeliner brush. This brush will help you to control the thickness of the line you create against your lash line.
Rutina’s blush has hints of berry and pink. Elf cosmetics Mellow Mauve powder blush is the perfect match to achieve this look.
To complete your beauty breakdown apply Bobbi Brown Rum Raisin lipstick to your lips, and follow it up with a lipgloss such as Bobbi Brown Kir Sugar on the center of the lips.
