Something great is always poplin’ off in New York City and this weekend was all about me finally getting back on the scene since having the baby.  Yesterday I attended the 5th anniversary event of In Her Shoes Blog titled “The Beauties & Brains Behind the Brands”. The event was held at the Brooklyn Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO.  I attended the first Beauties & Brains Behind the Brands that Renae, founder of In Her Shoes Blog, hosted so I knew I had to arrive on time to ensure I didn’t miss a minute!

The Beauties & Brains Behind the Brands Panel

The all star panel of change makers consisted of: Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily, Anthony Dickey of Hair RulesLatham Thomas of Mama Glow, and Demetria Lucas of A Belle in Brooklyn and BRAVO’s Blood, Sweat & Heels

Renae, founder of In Her Shoes Blog

Renae always asks wonderful thought provoking questions, to name a few “What was your tipping point?” “What is your mini vacation” and my favorite question of them all “What advice would you give to someone who wants to walk in your shoes?”

Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily – What advice would you give to someone who wants to walk in your shoes?

Always make goals. If you don’t have goals you can’t score. Speak things into existence. Be positive and be ready to receive it. Once you achieve your goals make new ones.

I was so happy that I got to spend a few minutes chatting with Claire, because during the panel discussion her energy was blazing!  As a blogger that started from the bottom now I’m here, I was in sync with most of what she said, and was inspired to do even more after hearing about how far she has gone. She shared the importance of women stepping out of their comfort zone and doing something new.   Claire knows what it truly means to struggle, she lived in Paris for 2 years and was broke like a joke!

Anthony Dickey of Hair Rules – What advice would you give to someone who wants to walk in your shoes?

Show up everyday. Have no excuse to not be there. If you want to change anything, change what’s in yourself.

Dickey is a character for sure and had us all laughs with just about every response he made.  He made it clear that he is a hustler and works 8 days a week! That’s what I’m talking about.

Latham Thomas of Mama Glow – What advice would you give to someone who wants to walk in your shoes?

Slow down and listen. Everything takes time. Practice makes perfect. So much emphasis on outcome. Stop looking at everyone’s feed and start looking within. What is your desire for the world. What do you want to feel? Don’t try to rush through because everyone is doing it. Don’t cut corners. Do your best.

Demetria Lucas of A Belle in Brooklyn and BRAVO’s Blood, Sweat & Heels – What advice would you give to someone who wants to walk in your shoes?

Fill the void. Started a belle in because she saw negative views on black women. If you want to be a writer write in your voice. Bring your voice to the convo that’s what’s unique about you. You being your best you. You can stand out in an overcrowded market place.

After I posted the pic of Demetria and I on Instagram and FaceBook every other questions was “Was Demetria nice? And being that the only interaction that I had with Demetria was taking this pic, I would have to say, Yes she is nice.  I caught Demetria outside as she was leaving.  Her fiancé had already walked away and she had just put on her leather jacket and I ran up to her as if we were friends asking hollering “Demetria, can I take a pic with you before you leave?” and she said, “Sure let’s do it”. I know how that exact moment feels, when you’re nearly in the car and someone comes up to you wanting a picture. This moment happens to me after damn near every event and I ALWAYS take the pic because it’s important to me to make everyones day. So to that I conclude Demetria is nice.  Based on her responses on the panel, it is evident that Demetria is a hard worker and is on her GRIND.

I had a great time and looking forward to part III, perhaps Renae will reach out to me to participate on her panel, after all I am a female entrepreneur  😉 *wink*
